Origines is a micro-negociant project of two passionate winemakers who seek to explore the most exciting NSW terroirs and make Chardonnays that express their origins.
Origines Wines was established in 2022 by Alex Beckett and Jan Taborsky. A micro-negociant project of two passionate winemakers who met in the Master of Wine program. We seek to explore the most exciting NSW terroirs and make Chardonnay that expresses its origins.
Working in cool climate New South Wales, vineyards have been carefully chosen to focus on Sustainable farming practices. An approach that reflects our deep respect for the land and its future with a focus on vine health and balance.
The winemaking philosophy is straightforward yet deeply meaningful. The aim is to capture every aspect of the grape in each glass. Hand picking from low yielding sites, carefully selecting the best fruit. Whole bunch press and fermentation with natural fruit solids and ambient yeasts
in Austrian oak casks. Long maturations on yeast lees without any additions and finally natural clarification and bottling without any finings or filtration.

Winemaker / Co-Founder
Alex is a highly awarded winemaker, with extensive experience gained from working in various viticultural regions across Australia and Internationally. He is deeply passionate about the industry, finding inspiration in wines that not only reflect their origin but also embody the future of sustainable farming.

Winemaker / Co-Founder
Jan is relatively speaking a newcomer to the wine industry, starting with a background in Journalism and media in the Czech Republic. Since moving to Australia to pursue his dream of wine he has championed a straightforward philosophy of respect to terroir. His work with unique grape varieties from high altitude cool climate Australian viticultural sites has lead to critical acclaim from both domestic and international wine media.
The 2024 growing season in New South Wales was marked by warmth and early momentum. A dry, El Niño-influenced Spring lowered disease pressure while sparking early bud movement and setting canopies up cleanly; flowering and set were generally sound, and summer brought consistently warm conditions that hastened flavour development and ripening.
In Murrumbateman (Canberra District), the season began notably hot and dry before severe October frosts cut crops in many vineyards, demanding careful block-by-block decision-making to protect quality.
The conditions of 2024 ultimately supported excellent fruit definition; with meticulous vineyard management, the wines show texture, generosity, power married with balancing mineral composition and refreshing acidities.
THE WINE
Sourced from an old vine selection of P58 clonal Chardonnay of pedigree, the 2024 Chardonnay is a wine of immaculate stony, and flinty texture enhanced by white peach, lime zest and fan of phenolic interest across the palate. Unsurprisingly, given this is the lowest altitude site we work with, the 2024 Murrumbateman release is a wine of not only generosity of flavour, but creamy silky textures which provide a lot of joy in early drinking, though worth noting the crisp talc of acidity is still prescient and combined with its textural intensity will reward careful cellaring.

In the Orange Wine Region, a quintessential cool-climate pattern played out at elevation: spring ran drier than average although a wetter November reset soil moisture, summer was warm rather than punishing, multiple >30 °C days arrived in January and February, disease pressure stayed low, acidity held impressively, and harvest commenced three weeks earlier than the long term average.

THE WINE
Expressive Meyer lemon and white peach fruits are elevated by a floral blossom lift and complexed by nutty savoury mineral complexity. The palate is rich and expansive, showing the volume of flavour that high altitude Chardonnay can achieve, whilst also being chalky and refreshing in acidity. We continue to work with a site of extreme altitude at nearly 900m elevation, contributing to the precise structure of this wine.

With Origines we believe we are at the beginning of something special. We are exploring the unique flavours of cool climate New South Wales wine regions through the lens of Chardonnay.
Making all our Chardonnays in the same fashion we strive to unfold the authentic stories of these special places. We hope to soon expand beyond New South Wales territory and to start exploring other Australian Chardonnay regions and perhaps even work with Chardonnay from special sites in other countries.
We are still at the beginning now, having a long, adventurous and exciting journey in front of us. And we would like to invite you to take the journey with us from the beginning.
